A figure of Athena holding a discus, late 19th century, bronze, called 'The Discophoros', after the marble statue in the Louvre, cast in two-colour bronze, 69cm high The original bronze work was created by the Greek sculptor Naucydes at the beginning of the fourth century BC. The one in the Louvre is a later Roman copy in marble of the original (now lost). The vendor's great-grandfather bought this in Vienna in the early part of the 20th century. Condition report: Surface wear, scratches and rubbing to patina. Particular rubbing to the raised forefinger. Some small dents. Dirt, dust and marks. General wear throughout.
