Palmer collection no.448 (labels)Vases less than 10cm high, but retaining the proportions of a larger piece, are often described as doll's house porcelains. During the late 17th century it became popular amongst wealthy Dutch ladies to create lavish doll's houses, complete with scale replicas of all their imported luxuries, including Kangxi blue and white porcelain. They were not meant for children's play, but rather a counterpart to the 'Cabinet of Curiosities' much admired amongst fashionable men. Original, complete doll's houses are now rare, but an 18th century version can be seen preserved in the Gemeentemuseum in the Hague.
