题识：晓妆唤起画楼人。绣谷司马钟。||钤印：司马钟印、秀谷 |说明：司马钟，字子英，号秀谷，一号绣谷，又号绣鹄，别号紫金山樵。江苏上元（今南京）人。官直隶河工州判。长写意花卉及鸟兽。落笔豪放，气势犹逸，脱尽描头画尾之习。或作草虫鱼虾一两笔，颇生动。其花鸟俱用粗笔点叶，最有古致。写生家有北派者自绣谷始。亦善画兰。山水不多作。性傲嗜酒落拓，酒酣一夕可了数帧。寻丈巨幅，顷刻而就。中年之笔与张雪鸿、张桂岩在伯仲之间。道光十二年（1832）有海棠翠羽图，正中年佳作，无悍霸习气。咸丰五年（1855）作松鹰图。
