|黄杨木质地坚韧，纹理细腻，硬度适中，没有棕眼，无大料，生长非常缓慢，有“千年难长黄杨木”的说法。旧时传说黄杨遇闰年不仅不长，反要缩短。宋苏轼曾言：“黄杨一岁长一寸，遇闰退三寸”，故有“千年矮”之谓，随着年代的久远，木色会由浅入深，逐趋枣红。适宜精雕细刻。此观音造像以黄杨木雕成，发挽高髻，双目微合，面容安详，身披天衣，手持净水瓶，赤足，如入物我两忘之境，澄明一片。观音为观音菩萨的略称，因佛经中宣扬其有三十三化身，解救十二大难，故得到人们的普遍信仰。此作品为圆雕，人物肌圆骨润，呈现出柔和的曲线，极富美感。||参阅：故宫博物院文物珍品大系《竹木牙角雕刻》16页
