|“銮仪卫则驯象所，于三伏日，仪官具履服，设仪仗鼓吹，导象出宣武门西闸水滨浴之。城下结彩棚，设仪官公廨监浴，都人于两岸观望，环聚如堵。”明清时，皇宫中例于三伏日为畜养之象洗浴，届时遣官以鼓乐引导，监浴。往往河两岸观者万众，其情形多于诗人吟咏见之，亦表现在书画和各类雕艺中，极具民谷意味。古时，大象被新尊视为“佛祖乘骑”，以“洗”同“喜”音，故以“洗象”之礼喻“喜象征瑞”之意。见畜象跪伏于地，身形健硕，四肢粗壮，于地者举桶过额、抬首仰视，伏卧象背者躬身屈体，双手扶桶，亦作仰视状。
