Description

Silver-mounted German Faience Tankard, painted polychrome floral and stylized architectural details. Silver lid comprises a silver coin (1675 Danish Krone?) , rampant lion on hinge, and mulitple engraved inscriptions, one which reads, ' Given by their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales, to Percy W. Doyle 1882'.Measures: 8.5 inch height x 4.5 inch diameter.Domestic Shipping: $40Doyle, Percy William (official; British; Male; 1804 – 1887). From the estate of Hans Cohn.Also known asPercy William DoyleBiographyDiplomat. Son of Major-General Sir Charles William Doyle and his first wife Sophia, daughter of Sir John Coghill. According to his obituary, he was first attached to the British Mission in Washington in 1825. In 1829 he was appointed to Madrid. In 1836 he was became Paid Attaché at Constantinople. His first appointment to the Mexican Republic came in 1843 when he was appointed Secretary of Legation. Diplomatic relations were broken off later that year after an unfortunate incident with Santa Anna. Doyle returned to Mexico in 1848, as Chargé d’Affaires, being appointed Minister Plenipotentiary from December 1851 to February 1858. He returned home on leave in 1855 and in 1858 retired from the Diplomatic Service on a pension. He was appointed CB in March 1858.
