Diplomatic relations were broken off later that year after an unfortunate incident with Santa Anna. Doyle returned to Mexico in 1848, as Chargé d’Affaires, being appointed Minister Plenipotentiary from December 1851 to February 1858. He returned home on leave in 1855 and in 1858 retired from the Diplomatic Service on a pension. He was appointed CB in March 1858.
