Description: Henry Moore (1898-1986) for Ascher Ltd. Family Groups, circa 1946 silk textile square original Ascher, Made in England label 90cm x 90cm. Provenance: with Esther Fitzgerald; Private collection. Literature: Anita Feldman (ed.), Henry Moore Textiles, Lund Humphries, 2008, pp.64-66; Geoffrey Rayner et al (eds.), Artists' Textiles 1940-1976, Antique Collectors' Club, 2014, p.38 for similar examples. In 1945 Ascher commissioned a number of leading modern British artists and designers to produce modern designs for headscarves. The brief was simple, and the artists were asked to produce designs, in any medium, colour or size, for a 90 centimetre silk or rayon square, choosing their own subject matter. The squares were launched in 1946 at Britain Can Make It, the first post-war exhibition held at the V&A.
