Hindu goddess Durga defeats the demon Mahishasura. Nepal. Old copper figure. Cold gold and polychrome painting. Aureole and demon separately casted and removable. Height 17 cm (6.7"). Weight 1946 g. From North German private collection. The right hand of Durga is raised to strike with her hammer, her left hand showing the vitarka mudra. Seated in half-open posture in front of an aureole on an adorned, lion-footed throne pedestal. The demon Mahishasura is pressed down by her legs. He is appearing in his human-like form and holding a sword and a shield in his hands. Slight signs of age and wear. Extremely rare and finely crafted sculpture.
