Scroll Height: 85 3/4" Width: 22 1/4" Painting Height: 38 1/2" Width: 12 1/4" Chen Banding (陈半丁; 1877-1970), aka Chen Nian 陳年, Chinese traditional scroll painting, ink on paper laid to silk, hanging scroll. Signed.Burgeoning White Rose Blossoms amongst cursive script calligraphy by Chen Banding (1876-1970). A Bushel of sinuous petal folds erupt like gushing water toward the head of each stem. The stem surface is lined with prickled spines and the leaves veins are made visible by delicate linework. A Lengthy poem written in semi-cursive script characters enshroud the bouquet of roses. Several red official artist seals can be found throughout this glorious piece of art and literature. PROVENANCE: From the heirloom collections of Wu Guozhen (吳國楨; October 21, 1903-June 6, 1984) was a Chinese political figure and historian, government official who served as mayor of Hankow (1932-1938), mayor of Chung-king (1939-1941), political vice minister of foreign affairs (1943-45), mayor of Shanghai (1946-1948), and governor of Taiwan (1950-1952) and the former Chairman of Taiwan Provincial Government. He resigned in 1953 and went to the United States, charging that Taiwan was becoming a police state.K.C. Wu lived in the United States where he served as professor of Chinese history at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia. During his time in the United States, he wrote various works, including a detailed analysis on Chinese culture in the context of mythology and early history in his book The Chinese Heritage.Wu is remembered mainly for his vital role in the formation of a liberal modern Taiwan and his anti-communist beliefs typical of a member of Kuomintang, but he is also remembered for his brave anti-Kuomintang rhetoric and turbulent disagreements with the more Russian-styled second President of Taiwan.The Collections of Wu Guozhen (吳國楨) presented and offered up to auctions ON DAY-1: from Lot-97 through Lot-127, continued from Lot-219 through Lot-255. His works combine the style of the Shanghai School and the Beijing School, forming a "Chen Style" style of small freehand.Chen Banding was born in a family of Chinese medicine practitioners in Keqiao Town , Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province in the Qing Dynasty. His young parents died and his family was poor. When he was 15 years old, he came to Lanxi Yiqianzhuang as an apprentice. He only came into contact with painting and calligraphy. In 1895, he went to Shanghai with his uncle Wu Yin , working in Yan Xinhou's home, and engaged in rubbing and other work. In 1906, he been invited to Beijing, and gained fame with the help of Wu Changshuo. In 1917, he met Qi Baishi. In 1918, Chen Banding became a professor at the National Peking Art College. In 1920, he joined the Chinese Painting Research Society hosted by Jinbei Building. After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, he and Qi Baishi painted the Songshi Peony, Mao Zedong signed it, and presented the painting to Indonesian President Sukarno. This work was later circulated back to China and was auctioned in 2003 for 20.35 million yuan. In 1954, according to his proposal, the government established the National Academy of Fine Arts (now the Institute of Fine Arts of the China Academy of Art). In 1957, he and Ye Gongyi founded the Beijing Painting Academy. He passed away in 1970.
