字卜五，号菊人，又号弢斋、东海、涛斋，晚号水竹村人、石门山人、东海居士。直隶（今河北）天津人。其曾祖父、祖父在河南为官居，出生于河南省卫辉府（今卫辉市）府城曹营街寓所。民国七年（1918年）10月，徐世昌被国会选为民国大总统[1] 。他下令对南方停战，次年召开议和会议[1] 。民国十一年（1922年）6月通电辞职，退隐天津租界以书画自娱。
