字惺吾，别署邻苏，湖北宜都人。同治元年（1862年）举人。著名地理学家、藏书家、金石书画家，对近代日本书法影响甚大。曾掌教两湖书院及存古、勤成两学画。光绪六年（1880年）从黎庶昌随使日本，值维新伊始，唾弃旧学，以廉价购得无数宋以来古籍而归。事后，日人觉悟，懊悔非常。无何，日人岛田彦桢以十万元购吴兴皕宋楼藏书，价值数十万金，作皕宋楼藏书源流考，述其往事，以为此举聊足报复。生平善考证，精鉴别，治金石学卓有声誉，尤工四体书，饶有金石气。画博古小品，苍润不俗。武汉起义后，移居上海卖字，求者颇众，尤以日人为多。
