$4,000
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. late 2nd to early 3rd century CE. A breathtaking onyx cameo and 18K gold pendant of a rounded rectangular form and sculpted in two layers, white on black, depicting a sweet couple in high relief, the pair of draped busts facing one another amorously, in a gold setting, the bezel framed by an attractive rope-patterned border and surmounted by a single central, ribbed suspension loop. Note the attention to detail - the fabric folds of the couple's garments, the woman's plaited coiffure, the man's close-cropped wavy locks, and perhaps most intriguing, those meticulously delineated facial features - the pair's quixotic eyes, aquline noses, and gentle smiles. Size: 1" W x .875" H (2.5 cm x 2.2 cm) including suspension loop; total weight: 3.5 grams Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Christie's, New York (Sale 2771, December 13, 2013, Lot 326); ex-private New York, USA collection, acquired from Francesca Artuner, Brussels, 1992 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
