$3,800
Pre-Columbian, Mexico and northern Central America, Mayan Territories, Late Classic, ca. 550 to 900 CE. Hand-carved from a long, human bone, this is a relief portrait of the face of a Mayan lord, surrounded by glyph-like symbols. The figure is abstract and curvilinear, divided into blocky areas, in the classic Mayan style. Elite Mayans commissioned artwork carved in stone, bone, shell, stucco, and ceramic, and their subjects reflect this: royalty and gods, made to adorn the temples, court buildings, and bodies that these people ruled. Royal courts employed full-time painters and sculptors to create these items. Size: 1.2" W x 7.55" H (3 cm x 19.2 cm) Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex J. Leff collection, Uniontown, Pennsylvania, USA All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #132586
