After Benjamin West (American, 1738–1820), "Oliver Cromwell Dissolving the Long Parliament," circa 1782, oil on canvas, canvas (unframed): 76"h x 107"w. Provenance: R.L. Forest sale, Anderson Galleries, New York, Februry 5, 1912, lot 572. In the catalogue of this sale it was said to have originally been sent by West to a nephew in Philadelphia. It subsequently belonged to Streeter Blair, an antique dealer in Beverly Hills, who died in 1966. The piece was then purchased at Sotheby Parke Bernet, Los Angeles, sale 157, number 4, March 10, 1975, then by descent to its current owners. Note: In a letter to the former owner of this painting, Marilyn Kushner, Curator of Collections at the Montclair Art Museum (Montclair, New Jersey) wrote in 1991 that the Montclair Art Museum had research done on their well documented painting of West's "Cromwell Dissolving the Large Parliament,"and in that research the scholar writes, "there is a larger replica of Cromwell, 75 x 104 in., said to have been a present sent by West to his Nephew in Philadelphia (Ex. Coll. Charles Volckman, Sr., Baltimore, Dr. Crim, Robert I. Forrest, Philadelphia until 1912, Streeter Blair, Leucadia and Beverly Hills, CA, c. 1951-1961). A letter from Professor Alan Staley in regards to this painting also accompanies this lot.
