A COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF JAMBHALA
TIBET, 11TH/12TH CENTURYHimalayan Art Resources item no.61750 8.1 cm (3 1/8 in.) high
|This plucky early Tibetan bronze of the plump wealth deity Jambhala has an unusual openwork base. A series of columns below the lotus pedestal likely depicts the flower's vines, which are frequently included in Pala stone sculpture of Northeastern India. Displaying further cognizance of Pala idioms, the Tibetan caster has produced a tall crown derived from such Pala models as a Jambhala published in von Schroeder, Indo-Tibetan Bronzes, Hong Kong, 1981, p.283, no.69G.
