|Augusta Savage was a sculptor and teacher associated with the Harlem Renaissance. In 1939, Savage was commissioned to make a 16 foot tall plaster sculpture entitled 'Lift Every Voice and Sing' for the New York World's Fair. The large plaster sculpture was destroyed after the event. Fortunately, Augusta Savage Studios created a selection of smaller metal models, such as the offered lot, which were offered as souvenirs of the fair. Very few of these models are known to have come up for auction
