|本组佛画内容十分丰富，有佛教、道教的各种神祇和民间诸神。据《佛祖统纪》水陆斋记载，梁武帝夜梦异僧告之「六道四生，受苦无量，惟启建水陆无遮大法会拔济之，始能脱苦」。帝乃披览群经，综合慈悲梁皇宝忏、阿难遇面然鬼王建立平等施食一事，用制仪文，首于金山寺启建，由梁武帝当斋。自此开启历史上第一场水陆法会，为众生普渡忏罪的盛会由此盛行至今。|本组佛画在继承唐宋道释人物画传统的同时，表现出世俗化的倾向，人物形象平易近人，用色明亮艳丽，日趋注重装饰效果。诸神皆描绘得十分传神，各极其妙，人物造型张力十足，表情深具戏剧性，富有艺术价值。
