天鸡尊的造型未见于商周青铜器，最早为洛阳宋墓出土为例，作鸟负尊形，应为宋代对于《周礼》中鸡彝、鸟彝的想象。据今日实物看来，宋、明时期仿古风之盛行，天鸡尊作为崇古情怀之具体念想，才为皇家贵族以及文人士大夫所推崇，而制作流行开来。天鸡是瑞兽，天鸡负尊或天鸡负瓶的图案为进宝意，同时，天鸡作为吉祥物，其作用之一就是避邪，它同时也是英雄勇武的象征。此天鸡尊造型灵动精美，翘首直立，振翅欲飞，长尾外卷挺立，身披彩翼，飘逸灵动，背负撇口尊，华美伶俐。
