In 1884, the painting with Cervantes' subject earned him a second place at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid. There are several versions of the painting that are known under different titles, such as ''Cervantes signing a copy of Don Quixote for the Count of Lemos'' or ''Signing the testament''.
