Ca. 18th Century. Cambodia. A fine quality antique sandstone linga, lingum or lingam with Yoni. A a symbol of fertility and energy it is an abstract or aniconic representation of the Hindu deity, Shiva. The linga is as a symbol of the energy and potential of God, Shiva himself. An image of Shiva can be seen on the linga. The front of the sculpture also depicts a number of lines of sanskrit text. The rear of the sculpture depicts the silhouette of purnaghata, the urn of plenty. The lotus flower growing from this urn has been depicted in a number of early Indian sources. The lotus supports the Dharmacakra or wheel of law, symbol of one of the Buddha's key teachings, the Four Truths of the Noble Ones. Please contact us for high resolution images of the piece.
