DS, signed ÂOscar Hammerstein" and "Sig Romberg, one page, 7.5 x 12, December 12, 1930. Official letter directed to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer with subject marked "RE: 'New Moon,' and reading, in full: "In producing your motion picture based on 'New Moon' we understand you have not used in this picture the song 'Softly As in a Morning Sunrise' which was mentioned as one of the four songs you were to use if you interpolated two new numbers. But on the other hand you have only interpolated one new number in the picture, when you had the right to interpolate two. We authorize your omission of said song 'Softly As in a Morning Sunrise' in your said picture, and this releases you of any obligation under our assignment of motion picture rights in 'New Moon' to you, to use the song 'Softly As in a Morning Sunrise' where only one interpolated number is introduced." Signed at the conclusion by Hammerstein and Romberg, and by producers Laurence Schwab and Frank Mandel, with Schwab signing twice. In very good to fine condition, with file holes to the top edge and old tape residue to the lower right edge. An interesting document authorizing the song 'Softly As in a Morning Sunrise' to be omitted from the movie version of their operetta New Moon. New Moon was given its first stage performance in 1927, the year of the first 'talking' movie, and was one of the first musicals to be adapted for the new media.Format: DS
