A Chinese bamboo brush pot of good size, with hardwood rim and base, footed on three legs. The brush pot is of cylindrical form, the exterior carved in varying levels of relief with a continuous figural landscape rendered with rural scenes. Red-crowned cranes perch upon a rocky outcrop and another in flight high up above the cloud line, amongst pine tress with splays of needles. Cranes in this scene refer to the transformed Taoist immortals, who sometimes were said to have magical abilities to transform into cranes in order to fly high on various journeys – a symbol of immortality, longevity and peace. Remnants of original scholars ink remain within the hollowed interior. Measures: H: 16.5 cm; D: 15 cm. Circa: Qing dynasty.
