Ca. 19th century bronze Khmer Temple Guardian or Lion figures (a pair), in the Angkor period, style of Banteay Srei 10th century. The âguardians of the gateâ, are placed around the outside of a temple to serve both as greeters and defenders, they were specifically intended to protect the principle entrances of temples. Each statue is carved in the round to show a strong body with an ornate coiffure with full lips and almond-shaped eyes with incised pupils beneath gently curving brows.
