'Bluff At Newport' By James Hamilton (1819-1878):
with red sunset lights on cliffs as gulls circle an onshore rowboat inside. Deeply carved and gilded frame with some plaster gaps. Hamilton trained under under J. M. Turner, and the thick impasto of the white that gilds the foaming edges of the waves and clouds above is a salient hallmark of this artist. Turner. exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and inspired the career of Edward Moran. Signature bottom right, and signed and dated 1873 on back. Hamilton, born in Ireland, established a career in America early in his life. , and one learned from his master, James Hamilton, who learned the technique from Joseph M. Turner.
