笔筒外壁以高浮雕、透雕技法雕刻「虎溪三笑」的典故。飞瀑悬崖，老松蟠曲，陶渊明站立桥上，慧远抬手欢笑，人物形象生动，刀法硬朗。以山林、松涧为界，步步设景。笔筒包浆醇厚，画意清幽，雕刻细腻，松鳞、竹枝、船篷无不刻画细致。山石皴擦有度，人物表情生动。虎溪三笑，出自《莲社高贤传》。据传，晋僧慧远居庐山东林寺时，送客不过虎溪，如过溪，神虎必会吼叫。一日居士陶潜、道士陆修静来访，与语甚契，相送时不觉过溪。虎辄号鸣，三人大笑而别。自此，「虎溪三笑」或「虎溪送别」的典故便流传下来，并视为儒释道三教亲和的象征。
