An Early 19th Century Oil on Canvas. Painted in Italy by an unknown artist, after the original attributed to Giorgione and later Titian, depicting a 'Knight of the Order of Malta', approx 55 x 65 cms, label to verso Note: The painting was brought back from Italy in the 1870's by Mary Gray Smith nee Dowie (1829-1910), whose great-uncle was Sir Alexander Mackenzie explorer after whom Canada's largest river is named, he was the first European to cross the North American Continent at its widest point. Mary Gray Smith married the widower Henry Smith in 1869, becoming Lady of the Manor at Ellingham Hall, Norfolk. She continued her family name by calling her son Horace Mackenzie-Smith. The painting was bequeathed to Horace's son Michael Mackenzie-Smith and by descent to Michael's son Peter Mackenzie-Smith, the current owner. Ellingham Hall remains in the family and found fame as the property where Julian Assange was under 'mansion arrest' for a year whilst on bail.
