Lobed concave lids with restrained ornamentation engraved with Coat du Arms of Thomas Townshend.Hallmarked in England, as London-make, and maker-struck by the famed Thomas Heming, Principal Gold and Silversmith to King George III; date letter for 1764 on both tureens. The lids are engraved with stag and crown, and the bodies with a substantial coat of arms associated of Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney. Family motto in engraved- DROIT ET AVANT. Sydney, Australia was given its name in his honor. Other marks include matched 3 and 4 match numbering, A hound standing over 6 grapeshot artfully engraved in a different style and technique on both bottoms.
