Large bronze statue Hermaphrodite (also known as Lovers) by Ernst Neizvestny (Russian-American, 1925-2016), created in 1988, numbered 3 from a limited edition of 9, signed to the base.Ernst Iosifovich Neizvestny was a Russian-American sculptor, painter, graphic artist, and art philosopher. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1976 and lived and worked in New York City. Playwright Arthur Miller described Neizvestny as an "expression of [Russia], of its soul, language, and spirit," and the "philosophical conscience of his country." American artist Alexander Calder told Neizvestny, "All my life, I create the world of children, and you create the world of man." [New York City Tribune, March 29, 1988.] The only auction record for a sculpture from Hermaphrodite edition is October 7, 2008 Sotheby's New York Lot 162 sold for $16,250 which was more then double the maximum estimate.
