此尊为羊头状，两只把手像羊角，两侧各有两个涡状凸起，像羊的眼睛，周身嵌有乳丁状铜扣，造型清奇，为我国古代羌族文化中的典型陶器。其造型与已知的中国古代陶器大不相同，据考证，羊头罐的制作下限是汉代，制作上限可能到战国。羌人崇拜羊，在一些羌人活动地区，羌民所供奉的神全是“羊身人面”，祭祀活动中常用羊作祭品，羌族少年成年礼时，羌族巫师用白羊毛线拴在被祝福者的颈项上，以求羊神保佑。羌族巫师所戴的帽子是用羊皮制成的，有两个羊角，巫师所持法器，也全是用羊角、羊皮、羊骨等制成。这种羊头罐很可能就是古代羌族的一种祭祀礼器。
