郭尚先 福建莆田人。字符闻，字元升，号兰石，嘉庆十四年（1809年）进士，历任乡试考官、国史馆纂修、文渊阁校理、四川学政、左赞善、光禄寺卿。道光十二年（1832年）春，诏授大理寺卿、礼部右侍郎，专司学政吏考之事。 一生博学多艺，著述甚丰。工书法。善绘画，山水之外，尤擅兰石；其篆刻则古朴浑厚，法度精严。著述亦丰。
