Large, Rare Pezzotaite
Sakavalana pegmatite near Ambatovita Mandrosonoro Province de Fianarantsoa, Madagascar Discovered in only November 2002, in a granitic pegmatite in the remote central highlands of the island nation in a region which has produced many other gem minerals. The small deposit of Pezzotaite was virtually exhausted and only a few kilograms of rough were recovered at the time. Named "raspberyl" by those in the industry, the mineral is, in fact, distinguished from beryl by its higher refractive index (1.615-1.619) and specific gravity (approximately 3.09-3.14), its spectrum, x-ray diffraction and its rhombohedral rather than hexagonal symmetry. Defined by its strong magenta pink color the present stone is a large example of this particular species. Characterized by a vivid, hot pink hue, this octagonal-cut stone has exceptional color and luster for the species. It is a sought-after example for the for the knowledgeable collector. Weighing approximately 12.20 carats and measuring 18.38 x 11.40 x 7.30mm
|Accompanied by a Gemological Institute of America report and Notable letter numbered 5181187218 and dated February 22, 2017 stating: This large pezzottaite exhibits a saturated vivid pink coloration, which is seen in this cesium rich mineral. Growth tubes and liquid fingerprints are present. Pezzottaite is a relatively new mineral that was discovered in 2002 by Dr. Frederico Pezzota, in Madagascar, which is the type locality for this mineral species. Gem quality pezzottaite is primarily recovered only from Madagascar. Roguh crystals that will cut large finished stones are very rare. Most finished stones are less that 5 carats and high quality stones over 10 carats are exceptionally rare. The combination of the rarity, large size and saturated color make this a notable pezzottaite.
