(8) Asian Opium / Water Pipe Accessories: Includes a) Chinese bone scrimshaw opium pipe with wooden stand; b) two metal pipe mouth pieces, possibly for a Japanese kiseru; c) a lantern form water pipe; d) a tobacco pipe well; e) a bird form opium pipe; f) a set of elephant form opium weights in a carved wood box. Dimensions are: scrimshaw pipe - 16 7/8 inches long. All measurements are approximate. Condition: All pieces have scattered wear. Mouthpieces have dents and metal water pipe has overall patina. Bird pipe has wear to wooden mouth piece. Scrimshaw pipe has splits to stem. Provenance: From the private collection of a former diplomat with the U.S. state department and his wife. Our consignor also served in the U.S. Armed Forces, serving two tours in Seoul, Korea. The Opium Pipes were purchased from a variety of locations. The Chinese bone scrimshaw opium pipe was purchased near Tachileik, Shan State in the Golden Triangle. The lantern form water pipe was purchased on Don Sao Island, Laos, located in the Mekong River in the middle of the Golden Triangle, between Burma, Laos and Thailand. The remaining two pipes were purchased at small shops in Rangoon.
