(2) Korean ceramic sanggam celadon glaze vases, one with fluted rim and the other with a diagonally cut mouth and lip on pouring edge. Each vase has a different 2-character mark and seal. Dimensions are: the first measures 12 1/2 inches high X 7 1/16 inches diameter; the second measures 12 1/2 inches high X 9 inches diameter. All measurements are approximate. Condition: Crackling in glaze of each vase, inclusions in glaze at foot of first vase; second vase has a small white mark on belly. Provenance: From the private collection of a former diplomat with the U.S. state department and his wife. Our consignor also served in the U.S. Armed Forces, serving two tours in Seoul, Korea. It was during his second tour between 1996 and 1998 that these pieces were purchased in various pottery shops located in Yeoju, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. Our consignor’s wife set up and ran a program on Yongsan Army post, where she would take military wives on shopping tours to the pottery shops in Yeoju. Subsequently, they had greater opportunities to find and purchase unique and well-made examples of pottery that was not regularly available in Seoul to most travelers.
