Burmese harp - called a saung or a saung-gauk - with 16 strings, boat shaped resonator and arch, includes four footed stand. Red painted wood with partially gilt raised carving and twisted nylon strings. Dimensions are: 29 inches long X 25 1/2 inches high; stand - 13 1/4 inches long X 7 1/2 inches high. All measurements are approximate. Condition: Paint is peeling, gilt wearing away; some of the strings have loosened and gone out of tune, although sound still quite clear; string ends frayed. Provenance: From the private collection of a former diplomat with the U.S. state department and his wife. Our consignor also served in the U.S. Armed Forces, serving two tours in Seoul, Korea. This piece was purchased at Augustineâs Antique Shop located in Rangoon Burma in 2006. The proprietor said the piece was over 100 years old. Per our consignor, there were only a few shops in Rangoon, where hard to find or antique items could be found and purchased and Augustineâs was the most well-known with the highest reputation and did a lot of business with the diplomatic community.
