Pair of Burmese black and red lacquered oil jars with elephant-carving lids and carved carrying stick. Carrying stick has ornately carved ends with bird figures and reflective applique. Dimensions are: jars - 8 7/8 inches square at base X 17 inches high; stick - 46 inches long. All measurements are approximate. Condition: Lacquer on jars slightly scratched, worn especially at carrying loops and bottom corners; one carrying loop missing top half; stick worn at carved ends. The carrying ropes are slightly discolored and fraying in places. One of the lids appears to have a spring in underside. Provenance: From the private collection of a former diplomat with the U.S. state department and his wife. Our consignor also served in the U.S. Armed Forces, serving two tours in Seoul, Korea. This piece was purchased at Augustineâs Antique Shop located in Rangoon Burma in 2006. The proprietor said the piece was over 100 years old. Per our consignor, there were only a few shops in Rangoon, where hard to find or antique items could be found and purchased and Augustineâs was the most well-known with the highest reputation and did a lot of business with the diplomatic community.
