Description
Translation provided by Youdao
Early 19th century design from the Sheffield, England region.
Known for the their extensive export of fine steel and cutlery to the United States, Sheffield-made Bowies like this example would have sated the American hunger for excellently crafted blades in the new and popular form. The 9.25"L blade, with its long, slender clip point, deeply beveled false edge, and bulging belly, are indicative of the early Bowie profile. Nickel silver guard and pins lead to the signature coffin handle, with deep reliefs of a lion on either side. The short scales, of antique bone, have some expansion cracks and chips, and an unused shield-shaped monogram plate is extant on either side. An antique black leather sheath is included.
Issued: 1840s
Dimensions: 14.25"L x 2"D
Country of Origin: England
