砚石取老坑端石为材，细润温润，琢工精细，包浆古旧。该器为仿铜镜的形制而做，砚面打磨平整，砚背中心为一扁圆钮，中有穿，周围浮雕青龙白虎，朱雀玄武四神，身躯内卷，气势汹涌，双眼微突，张口露齿腾云驾雾，指爪威武有力。四神的外围分别装饰一周短直线纹和卷草纹。该器造型古朴沈稳，典雅大方，设计新颖，构思巧妙，纹饰层次分明，雕刻精细。带紫檀嵌玉盒。
