《诗经·周南·卷耳》云：“我姑酌彼金罍，维以不永怀”，可知罍为盛酒器，器型见于商代晚期，分为圆形和方形两大类。此件牺首方罍为砂胎仿青铜器造型，仪态庄严，可参见着录于《大清会典图》的牲首罍。肩颈交汇处有两条弦纹。肩部两侧各置兽首环耳一只。四面居中装饰牺首，凌空而立，两侧对称变形火纹，透出古拙之美。整器施宜钧釉，釉色变化深浅不一，层次丰富，釉水垂流直下，给人以飞瀑千丈之感。此砂胎方罍制作工艺精湛，造型难度极大，加之宜钧釉烧成不易，且品相完好，实属难得。
