根据涅盘经记载，释迦牟尼在过去世修菩萨道时，于雪山苦行，“唯食诸果。食已，系心思惟坐禅，经无量岁。”“绝形深涧，不涉人间，结草为庵，被鹿皮衣。”是谓之雪山大士，雪山大士像多流传于元明时期，此尊雪山大士像即是明代造型的典型之作。以瘦骨嶙峋的老人为本，面部隆高之鼻准，卷结堆积之眉髯，均使两目陷得更深凹，两颐瘦得更枯癯。双手扶膝呈游戏坐，神态恬然慈静，眉眼生动，流露出欣然悟道的微笑， 另配以石山以表现其深山独处坐禅的情景，形象耐人寻味。
