《后汉书·袁安传》唐·李贤注引《汝南先贤传》记载：“汉时袁安未达时，洛阳大雪，人多出乞食，安独僵卧不起，洛阳令按行至安门，见而贤之，举为孝廉，除阴平长、任城令。”此后“袁安高卧”就指身处困穷但仍坚守节操的行为。此幅《袁安卧雪图》正是描绘这一典故，吴昌硕早年的生活也是饱经忧患，流离失所，食不果腹，但是仍未丢失文士的气节操守，正如这画中人袁安一般模样。画中有蒲华的题跋，吴昌硕和蒲华是至交好友，蒲华去世后的墓志是吴昌硕撰文的。在山水画上，他犹好蒲华笔墨苍茫、纵横豪放、韵味隽永的风貌。此作品近景逸笔草草勾出山松，中景干笔擦出草屋，远景淡墨铺满背景，以衬托前景白雪皑皑，整个画面笔墨酣畅，氤氲华滋。
