Famed Rhode Island commodore (1718 - 1802) who served as Commander in Chief of the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War. Revolutionary War - dated endorsement signature, "E. Hopkins," on the reverse of a manuscript document signed by Henry Ward, one page, 6 x 3.5, in full: "State of Rhode Island, The General Assembly at November Session A.D. 1780, ordered Two Thousand Pounds in Circuit Court, Money to be paid to Henry Merchant Esq'r out of the General Treasury."
