Planter, soldier, and politician (1732 - 1792) who served as a major general during the Revolution and later served as governor of Maryland. ALS signed ÂW. Smallwood, one page, 7.25 x 11.25, March 18, 1785. Letter to Christopher Richmond in Annapolis, in part: "I take this opportunity by Maj'r Jenifer of inclosing you a discharge granted William Hammilton in consequence of his former Discharge being fraudulently taken from him by a certain Benjamin Ward which Hamilton urges he made you acquainted with that you desired him to apply to me for another Discharge & that you wou'd endeavour to stop his pay. The Discharge recites the abuses & recommends Hamilton for Redress to yours & Mr. White's attention. If therefore you can render the poor Fellow any service on the occasion you will do an act of public Justice & oblige him as well as me."
