wood carved,Nepal, 17th century,Size: 29 cmIndra is a vedic deity in hinduism, the God of lightning, thunder, rain and the heavens. Indrani is his wife and also known as „Shachi“ or „The Endless Beauty“. She is known to be the Goddess of jealousy and wrath. Indra is seated on his white elephant Airavata, in royal ease pose; his right arm resting casually on his knee while he is supporting himself with his left arm, his other knee flat on the ground. Next to him is Indrani, sitting in the same position but forming a blessing mudra and sitting on a lotus petal. Both of them are adorned with jewellery and have a nimbus around their head. They are framed by a three-banded aureole and the whole piece is placed on a bigger lotus shaped platform.
