Diorama with New Zealand interest: shows the ship the 'Waitangi' at sea, moored and flying the red Ensign, marked 'Henry Hicks Xmas 1881' verso and under written 'Reclassed Mar 1st 1893 Charles Hicks'. 36'' wide x 25 1/4'' high x 14 1/4'' deep. Waitangi was ordered in 1874 and completed in 1884. She was a passenger / cargo iron sailing ship made by John Blumer & Co, Sunderland. Her owner was the New Zealand Shipping Co Ltd, London and was used to ship up to 312 emigrants at a time. Waitangi is the name of a bay in Northland, Bay Of Islands, New Zealand. Hicks Bay is a bay and coastal area in the Gisborne District of the North Island of New Zealand.
