Description

A George III silver shaped circular salver by John Crouch I & Thomas Hannam, London 1776, the beaded rim with foliage at intervals, the incurve embossed with patera and drapery swags, engraved with a broad band, an armorial and crest, on three ball-and-claw feet, 33cm (13in) diameter, 968g (31.1 oz) The shield and crest for TUCKER of Woodland, Dorset and Tenterden Kent. Blazon: azure, on a chevron embattled, counter-embattled or between three seahorses naissant argent, five gouttes-de-poix Crest: a lion’s gambe erect and erased gules, charged with three billets fesswise or, in the foot a battle axe argent, handle of the second (TUCKER) The original grant of arms was made by William Segar, Garter King of Arms (1607-33), to the family but what we have here is a differenced version of that grant that would have been used by a cadet branch of that family. There is a second record of a grant to William TUCKER of Caryton Hall Devon dated 16th January 1721/2 which may very well be to endorse this differenced version.
