据传菩提达摩在南朝刘宋年间，乘商船到达广州。及后达摩闻说梁武帝信奉佛法，于是至金陵与其谈法。双方终因会晤不契，不欢而散，达摩悄然北上。途经北江，没有渡江的工具，遂将一束苇草置于江面，踏蹑而渡，后至北魏，所到之处，以禅法教人，成为禅宗始祖。以白玉制作而成，玉质优良，洁白莹润，正面浮雕达摩一苇渡江图，最上方落有：“子冈”二字款。背面刻唐代诗人陈子昂的《春日登金华观》：白玉仙台古，丹丘别望遥。山川乱云，楼榭入烟霄。日仙渟。此器玉质莹润细洁，刀法细劲遒婉，人物刻画生动，当为当时玉器之精品。
