笔筒以竹制成，呈圆柱形，包浆油亮精美。纹理极其细腻，采用留青手法刻成。留青又称“皮雕”， 以竹子表皮的一层青筠为纹饰，将纹饰以外的竹青铲去，露出竹肌为地，积年累月，竹肌处色泽泛红，青筠处微微泛黄，地章与纹饰形成色差对比，构成极佳的艺术效果，剔地浅刻山居图，群峦竦峙，隐约可见其屋舍，构图细致，错落分明。，是竹刻中的一件精彩之作。
