China, 19th - 20th century. Early 19th century Chinese gilded wooden frieze or mantelpiece with central carved relief of three fish surrounded by sea flora and stylized waves. The underlying wood is carved in a raised pyramid grid pattern, while the lip of the mantel is carved with stylized geometric patterns. Sides and back are not gilded. Dimensions are: 23 1/2 inches long X 9 inches wide X 3 1/2 inches high. All measurements are approximate. Condition: Wood at top rim is cracked and has lost its gilding; corners somewhat broken. Area of loss in gilding at each front-side, in perfect semicircle around a nail hole; further nail holes in bottom rim, where gilding and wood have also worn or splintered along edge. Dorsal fin of center fish has broken off. Sticker on top shelf states "Early 19th century Chinese carving."
