字阜长，号舜琴，室名怡受轩。浙江萧山人。为任熊之弟，其善于人物，花鸟、山水无不擅长。自幼即好丹青，同治七年（1886年）起寓居苏州，并往来上海，以鬻画、课徒为主。与顾文彬子顾承相友善，曾为设计怡园（乃近代名园之一）。1888年54岁时双目失明，后病卒于苏州。与任熊、任颐时称“三任”，合任预为“四任”，并为海上画派代表画家之一。壬午仲夏阜长任薰写扵恰受轩。任薰（白文）
