字文升，号退谷，又号秋泉，长洲（今江苏苏州）人。 康熙三十六年（1697）会元，官中允。书法与姜西溟（宸英）称姜汪。得执笔法，书绝瘦硬颉颃张照，诸子莫及 。曾题沈凡民印谱自谓初学停云馆麻姑仙坛、阴符经，友人讥为木板黄庭，因一变学赵得其弱，再变学褚得其瘦。晚年尚慕篆、隶，时悬阳冰颜家庙碑额於壁间，观玩摹拟而岁月迟暮，精进无几 。其书能大而不能小，然有奇势，纵横自放，而分间布白，无分寸失。名公卿碑版多出其手。著瘞鹤铭考、秋泉居士集、全秦艺文誌。卒年六十六 。汪士鋐士鋐之印（白文）（朱文）
